When Online Reviews Cross the Line
Online reviews are a legitimate part of consumer feedback — but they are also routinely weaponised. Competitors post fake negative reviews. Disgruntled ex-employees fabricate workplace complaints. Customers who never used your services publish damaging falsehoods. And in some cases, individuals use the threat of a negative review as blackmail or extortion.
Under UK defamation law, a false review that causes or is likely to cause serious harm to your reputation is actionable. For businesses, the Defamation Act 2013 requires proof of "serious financial loss" — but this threshold is often met by demonstrating lost customers, cancelled contracts, or reduced revenue following publication.
The challenge is that each review platform has different policies, different reporting mechanisms, and different attitudes to legal removal requests. What works on Trustpilot will not work on Google. What works on Google will not work on Glassdoor. Our solicitors have platform-specific expertise and established relationships that accelerate the removal process.
Platform-by-Platform Removal Process
Each platform has a different process for challenging and removing defamatory reviews. Here's what to expect.
Trustpilot
Removal Process
Flag via Business Portal → Trustpilot Content Integrity Team review → If rejected, submit legal complaint with evidence → Court order for removal if necessary
Typical Timeframe
Flagging: 5–10 business days. Legal removal: 4–12 weeks.
Key Insight
Trustpilot will remove reviews that violate their guidelines but requires strong evidence for legal removals. A pre-action letter to Trustpilot's legal team in Copenhagen often accelerates the process.
Google Reviews
Removal Process
Flag review as inappropriate → Google Policy Team review → If rejected, file legal removal request via Google's court order process → Norwich Pharmacal order to identify reviewer
Typical Timeframe
Flagging: 3–14 days. Legal removal: 6–16 weeks.
Key Insight
Google rarely removes reviews through flagging alone. A court order is often the most effective route. We can also pursue Norwich Pharmacal orders to unmask anonymous reviewers.
Glassdoor
Removal Process
Flag review via Employer Centre → Glassdoor Content Moderation review → Submit legal demand to Glassdoor Inc. (US) → Court proceedings if necessary
Typical Timeframe
Flagging: 7–14 days. Legal removal: 8–20 weeks.
Key Insight
Glassdoor is US-based and strongly resists removal requests. UK court orders are enforceable, but the process requires specialist knowledge of cross-border enforcement.
